FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Clear answers about cognitive assessment, matching, private galleries, conversation, contact exchange and safety.
What is Cortex?
Cortex is an intelligence-first dating platform designed around cognitive and Mindprint compatibility, one active connection at a time and progressive mutual consent.
Is Cortex an IQ dating app?
Cortex uses a monthly Cognitive Assessment to generate a Cognitive Score and cognitive profile.
Unless and until the assessment is professionally psychometrically validated, Cortex should not describe the result as a clinically validated IQ score.
How many questions are in the assessment?
Each monthly assessment has 50 questions: 28 Cognitive Core questions and 22 Cortex Mindprint scenarios. You have 35 minutes.
The Cognitive Core covers six areas:
- Logical Reasoning
- Numerical Reasoning
- Verbal Reasoning
- Pattern Recognition
- Spatial Reasoning
- Working Memory
Mindprint covers flexibility, curiosity, openness, perspective taking, emotional regulation, conflict reasoning and communication precision.
Both scores start at 20; the other 80 points come from your answers, so every score is between 20 and 100.
How often do I take the Cognitive Assessment?
Once every calendar month.
A new assessment becomes available on the first day of each month.
Can I retake the assessment to improve my score?
Yes, up to 4 assessments per calendar month: one included, plus up to 3 retakes. Retakes are currently free.
You choose which result shows on your profile.
What happens if I do not complete the new monthly assessment?
If you do not currently have an active Cortex connection, new matching remains unavailable until you complete the current month's assessment.
What if a new month starts while I am already connected to someone?
Your existing connection continues.
Cortex does not automatically terminate an active connection because a new monthly assessment has become due.
What can other users see before matching?
Potential matches may see:
- your first name;
- your age;
- your Cognitive Score and its six areas;
- your Mindprint Score and its seven dimensions;
- your compatibility with them;
- your approximate distance;
- the month and year of your current assessment.
Can people see my photograph before matching?
No.
Cortex does not display private photos during discovery.
Can I upload photographs from my phone gallery?
No.
Private gallery photos are captured directly within Cortex using the front-facing camera.
How many photos can I have?
Your Private Gallery holds between 3 and 10 photographs. At least 3 are needed to use Cortex.
How close must someone be to appear as a possible match?
There is no fixed limit. Each time you open Discover you choose the search distance, in kilometres or miles.
Only people who are online right now appear.
Can I change the search distance?
Yes. Set any distance you like each time you open Discover.
Can I have more than one active match?
No.
Cortex allows one active connection at a time.
What happens when we both choose Interested?
Cortex creates a mutual connection.
Both users become unavailable for another match until the current connection ends.
When can I see another person's photos?
Only after a mutual match and successful Private Gallery request.
One person requests access, and the other must approve it.
Can someone see my photos while hiding theirs?
No.
Private Gallery access is always reciprocal.
Does unlocking the gallery automatically open chat?
No.
After viewing each other's photographs, both users independently decide whether they want to communicate.
Chat opens only when both select Yes.
What happens if one person does not want to chat?
Chat remains closed.
Private Gallery access is immediately revoked for both users.
The connection then moves to the WAIT or UNMATCH decision.
What is WAIT?
WAIT allows both users to temporarily place the connection on hold.
During WAIT:
- chat is locked;
- private galleries are locked;
- neither person can begin another match.
How long does WAIT last?
A maximum of seven days.
Cortex displays the remaining period clearly.
For example:
Connection on Hold — 5 days remaining
Can we reconsider while we are in WAIT?
Yes.
Either person may request reconsideration.
If both agree before the seven-day period expires, the connection can return to the Private Gallery and chat-decision stage.
What happens when the seven-day WAIT period ends?
If the connection has not progressed, Cortex automatically unmatches both users.
What happens if one person chooses WAIT and the other chooses UNMATCH?
The connection ends.
UNMATCH always overrides WAIT.
Can I type my phone number into Cortex chat?
No.
Cortex is designed to prevent direct phone-number and email sharing through ordinary text messages.
Users should use the Contact Exchange feature instead.
When can we exchange contact details?
Contact Exchange unlocks after you have each sent at least 50 messages in chat.
Either person may then send a request, and the other chooses what to share — phone, email, or both. Nothing is revealed without agreement.
Can I share only my email?
Yes. When accepting a request you choose exactly which details to share.
What happens if someone declines my Contact Exchange request?
Your contact details remain private.
The Cortex chat may continue normally.
Can I send photos, videos or voice notes in chat?
Not in Cortex V1.
The initial version uses text-only chat.
Can I unmatch someone whenever I want?
Yes.
You do not need the other person's approval to unmatch.
Can I block another user?
Yes.
Blocking immediately ends the connection and prevents future Cortex matching with that account.
Can I report unsafe or inappropriate behaviour?
Yes.
Cortex provides reporting options for safety, identity, harassment, fraud and other concerns.
Can Cortex completely prevent screenshots?
No.
Different devices and operating systems provide different levels of screenshot protection.
Cortex may use technical safeguards and deterrents where available, but no platform should promise that screen capture is impossible in every situation.
Why doesn't Cortex show hobbies, occupation or interests on profiles?
Because Cortex is designed so that people discover those things naturally through conversation.
The profile provides enough information to decide whether an intellectual connection is worth exploring.
The rest should be learned from the person.
Why only one connection at a time?
Cortex is designed around intentional dating.
The goal is to encourage users to explore one connection meaningfully before beginning another.
What is the central idea behind Cortex?
Meet the mind first.
Then decide together how far the connection should progress.
